Biofuels Nonsense...

From BIASED-BBC, criticizing BBC´s global warmist alarmist Mark Kinver for an article on a new EU sustainability certificate for biofuels:

Quote:On the one side, the EU is doing what it does best - creating new layers of lunatic bureaucracy to "certify" that forests cut down for biofuel are not doing ecological harm. They proudly declare that their new laws are the "most stringent" (i.e. most repressive) in the world. Over in the other corner, those "environmentalists" (to the BBC, the most saintly group of people on earth) are yelping that - despite years of pressure to force biofuel production - they now think that cutting down trees by the million to do so is not a good idea. Mr Kinver, of course, reports it all without any attempt at balance.

There´s a lot of nonsense coming from each corner, but I would like to remark each "position" with the key issue (land use); looks like an insane dialog about completely different things:

Greenpeace:

Quote:As agricultural land is set aside to grow biofuels, pressure grows to cut down forests to grow food. The increase in European biodiesel demand could lead to the loss of vast areas of forests. The Commission is expected to make a policy decision over how to manage ILUC (indirect land use change) impacts by the end of the year.

Note that it is not the same whether food or biofuel crops are the ones to grow in the cut down forests. Biofuel crops are more profitable. Do subsidies sound familiar?

EU Commision:

Quote:Land is limited. Do you not need to cut down forests to produce biofuels?

The 10% target would require some 2 – 5 Million hectares of land, according to different estimates of the net land use change impact. The EU has sufficient amount of land previously used for crop production and now no longer in arable use to cover the land needed, even if all the biofuels consumed were to be produced in Europe. Also in other parts of the world, there are alternatives to fresh deforestation. In Indonesia, there are an estimated 3 – 12 Million hectare of land that has been deforested in the past and left to become wasteland. It makes sense to bring this land into use.

Hi All,
Today at work Jeff told me about the latest Christopher Booker article he had read,
apparently "they" were shown to be wrong by 100,000%.
Wow, I thought, and there was me thinking the IPCC was bad with the odd decimal place being wrong..

It appears new levels of inaccuracy have been attained, the subject matter was windpower, according to Jeff,
so off I went to find with a search engine the mentioned 100,000% error.
It was not difficult to find.

Excerpts,
" It would be hard to beat the sad gullibility with which the media last week reported
the plans of Lord Mandelson and our Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband to cover
our countryside and sea with 10,000 more huge wind turbines. According to one newspaper,
it would need "an area of only 70 square miles to generate Britain's total power requirements".

Well, no, actually. To meet our peak demand of 56 gigawatts of electricity would require
112,000 turbines covering 11,000 square miles, or an eighth of Britain's entire land area. "

and,
" Another newspaper solemnly reported that a new study shows that
"a well-placed turbine could make enough energy to power 825,000 homes".
Well, no, actually. The figure for a single 2 megawatt turbine would be just 825 homes,
meaning that the newspaper was only 100,000 per cent wrong. "

The one-two punch thrown by Democrats and their counterparts in mainstream media have probably cost Alaska the governorship of Sarah Palin.

Sarah has provided two reason for stepping down as Alaska's governor: 1) The money she and the state have had to spend defending against 15 ethics complaints, all dismissed, and 2) The endless attacks against her spouse and children by Democrats, the media and those in pop culture.

Politics is officially a rich person's sport -- so long as you are rich enough to defend yourself against a string of baseless complaints you can stay.

Also, the children of Republican politicians are now a target-rich environment for Democrats and media demagogues. It makes you wonder how many good people otherwise willing to serve, perhaps even better than those serving us now, are deciding to stay away from politics because of ruthlessness from Democrats and the media.

Let's look at both issues.
