I think that the longer term trend of global cooling has set in, and an El nino every decade or so is the ocean's response to this trend- as the atmosphere cools, the oceans release their heat every now and again- in an El Nino event, giving an apparent anomalous heat spike in the atmosphere. This represents a loss of heat from the system, not a gain!
