He should immediately stand up and say "I told you so". He, not Al Gore, is looking like the true prophet here. There seems to be the attitude that there must be a push to try even harder with the measures that didn't work the first time. What's the definition of insanity that is attributed to Einstein? The article breaks into speculation-mode at the end and then actually admits to benefits of global warming. That's unusual at least. |

RE: What utter claptrap! Thoughts please.
This is all I am going to comment on:
Quote:It's also true that even if all greenhouse emissions could magically be halted tomorrow, the elevated levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere -- higher than at any time in the past 800,000 years, according to researchers who study Antarctic ice-core samples -- would take many decades to decline to historical levels. False: The residence time for CO2 in the atmosphere is between 5-15 years. Decline to historical levels is misleading because right now we are near the bottom in CO2 levels as compared to the last 500 million years. In the article itself he fails like so many others to make a case that increased levels of CO2 is really bad for you.The real reason why being an alarmist makes one look like a fool. Ok one more quote to comment on: Quote:If the planet is warm now because of human-generated greenhouse gases, it's going to get warmer. If the low-lying Maldives disappear beneath the Indian Ocean because of sea-level rise, that will be a disaster. If "extreme" weather events such as major hurricanes really do become more frequent, that will increase the potential for catastrophe in coastal cities around the world. Not that long ago the maldives was underwater and yet people live on it now.A fringe existence is what they chose, since the safety margin of sea level change around the small island is very small. Yet these people cry about it like the pig headed morons they are. Hurricanes are NOT increasing in numbers as shown by the last 4 seasons AFTER the big one that has not been remotely approached since. That is because the favorable atmospheric conditions that existed in 2005 was very rare, therefore it will be a while before another exceptionally favorable hurricane season will happen. Not sure it is even tactics as much as the belief system in action. They appear to begin the process assuming (1) warming is bad (2) warming is the same thing as anthropogenic warming (3) rising CO2 is the same thing as human emissions (4) high CO2 levels and rising temps at the same prove the former causes the latter. There are many others too. Just basic assumptions all over the place that everyone is expected to accept as "true". |

Looks like the source is "The Deniers" by Lawrence Solomon, here:
Maximum "Residence Time" of Atmospheric CO2 I know you think you understand what you thought I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant! |
